United States Certified Public Accountant

The United States Certified Public Accountant (US CPA) is one of the world’s most recognized accounting designations. The US CPA license is the only license to practice public accounting in the US State CPA exams are created under guidelines issued by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). A US CPA license can open unlimited possibilities for your career regardless of where you are.

If you’re interested in working in the US, increasing opportunity to travel for global and international roles and aim for global recognition and reputation, that’s your chance to achieve your goals with only four exams.

With a growing economy, there’s never been a better time to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow 10% from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average growth for all other occupations.

Getting your CPA license gives you more career flexibility, too, with work that touches on everything from auditing and management consulting to international financial reporting and tax advisory services. CPAs can work in almost any industry they desire, whether for private companies and nonprofits or government agencies and more. Opportunities can be broad or as niche as forensic CPA work alongside law enforcement.

What is a CPA?

A CPA license is the accounting profession’s highest standard of competence, a symbol of achievement and assurance of quality. Whether you are licensed or soon-to-be licensed, NASBA provides information and resources you need to earn and maintain the respected CPA credential.

A CPA is a certified public accountant who is licensed by a state board of accountancy. To earn the prestige associated with the CPA license, you are required to demonstrate knowledge and competence by meeting high educational standards, passing the CPA exam and completing a specific amount of general accounting experience. The two most important aspects of becoming a CPA are passing the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting licensing requirements in the state where you want to practice.

How is the exam to obtain the CPA?

Administered by the AICPA, the CPA Exam is an on demand, computer-based test divided into four sections. Each section is divided into small segments called testlets. There are five testlets per section.

The exam is only in English and is graded from a range of 0 to 99 – with a score of 75 or higher on each section required in order to pass. This is a scaled score – not representative of the percentage of correct answers. States can issue scores in any form they choose. For instance, some only issue pass or fail results.

When can I take the CPA exam in Brazil?

The CPA Exams in Brazil are administered in the second month of each trimester (February, May, August and November). There are two types of questions: multiple-choice questions (MCQ), and task-based simulations (TBS).

Each exam takes 4 hours (with a 15-minute break), for a total of 16 hours. You can take any

Exam in any order you like but remember that all four sections must be completed within 18 months.

The Core sections are Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), and Taxation and Regulation (REG). The Discipline sections are Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Control (ISC), and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP).

How can one check the CPA Examination Application/Eligibility Inquiries for each jurisdiction?

The Uniform Exam for CPA is one of the requirements for certification as a US CPA. Consequently, passing the Exam is not in itself sufficient to satisfy the certification requirements. Certification requirements vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and are described on the websites of all Boards of Accountancy. A list of the websites of the US Boards of Accountancy is available on the NASBA www.nasba.org website.
